An Analysis of the Advanced Depressive State Which Causes Immobilisation and a Sense of Doom

By Milton Johanides

There are many different stages of depression. The vast majority of people suffer from a shallow, temporary state which can be treated by a variety of cognitive therapeutic exercises, some of which I have discussed in earlier articles. But what about advanced chronic depression? Is there any hope?

People have described to me (and I have had some experience of) a doom-laden state of depression which literally immobilises the bearer. The end times described in Revelation describe the fate of Satan and his impending imprisonment for a 1000 years immobilised by chains. It seems that while Satan has free reign on earth he chooses to exact this same punishment on innocent followers of Christ. Severe chronic depression is nothing less than the spiritual wrapping of chains around the victimised individual

The sense of doom that is common in these instances is nothing less than a vision of Satanīs doom creeping into the human spirit. Why this happens to certain individuals and not others and why the protection of Christ does not stop it from happening is a mystery. This article will not attempt to offer a cure in such a short space. But it is hoped that by drawing attention to the condition, sufferers can take some small comfort from the fact that they are NOT alone, they are NOT responsible, and they are NOT condemned.

Until more work is done on the subject, let us unite in prayer and offer our sympathies to those who suffer from depression and are unable to continue with the normal running of their lives. My advice to them is continue to believe in miracles, stay strong in your faith, and focus on the eternal glory of the Lord who in the end makes all our futures truly blessed.
